An IP rating is an Ingress Protection Rating or an International Protection rating. 

This rating specifies the level of environmental protection of an enclosure of electrical or mechanical equipment. Specifically, the level of protection against the intrusion of water, dust, solid objects (tools or screws) or accidental human contact.

The first number indicates protection from solid materials or objects. The second number specifies the protection from liquids such as water. The higher the number, the better the protection.

The IP rating provides users with more detailed information than general marketing terms such as ‘waterproof’ or ‘dustproof’.
